Our Story
A Book, A Beginning
The idea for The Book Barks wasn’t born in a boardroom, it started with a single book.
It was Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney. A book whose words lingered long after I turned the last page. Her writing made me pause, reflect, and question myself in ways I hadn’t before. It wasn’t just a story; it was an experience, one that made me realize how powerful books can be when they truly speak to us.
I remember holding it in my hands, feeling the weight of the words inside, knowing that stories had the power to change people, shift perspectives, and create movement. I had always believed that books weren’t just objects; they were companions, teachers, and windows into different worlds.
But there was something missing.
Too often, I saw people struggling to find books that truly spoke to them, stories that left them thinking long after the last page. I wanted to build a space where books weren’t just sold, but curated with intention, where every selection had the potential to inspire, challenge, and move its reader.
So, I started small. A few handpicked books. A quiet hope that maybe, just maybe, other readers were searching for the same thing.
And they were.
A Mission Beyond Books
Then came Dexter.
I never planned to have a second dog, but life had other plans. Dexter was meant to be a foster, just temporary, just until he found a permanent home. But fostering turned into forever, and I became one of those "foster-failed" pawrents.
For two years, Dexter lived in a 60x50cm cage, exposed to the scorching heat and pouring rain. Rarely fed, rarely loved, barely surviving. His story is not unique. I’ve seen so many others just like him: abandoned, neglected, and left to fend for themselves.
At first, I cried.
Every heartbreaking rescue video, every desperate plea for help, I watched them all. Then, I couldn’t anymore. I started skipping the posts, scrolling past the stories because they hurt too much.
Until one day, I realized that silence was not an option.
That was the moment The Book Barks became more than just a bookstore.
Books That Give Back
A portion of our proceeds goes toward supporting dog shelters and rescue efforts. Every book you purchase helps provide food, medical care, and shelter for dogs in need, dogs like Dexter, who deserve a second chance.
We believe in the power of stories, whether found in books or in the eyes of a rescued dog. Both remind us of resilience, of survival, and of the kindness that still exists in the world.
So when you choose The Book Barks, you’re not just buying a book.
You’re giving a voice to the voiceless.
We’re just getting started.
And we hope you’ll be part of this journey.
